Gin culture

I was just looking at the CFP for the Group for Early Modern Cultural Studies annual conference, the theme for which is "Appetite, Desire, and Gargantuan Pleasures." In case the possibilities of that topic aren't sufficiently clear, the webpage gives a variety of prompts. The one that caught my eye was "gin culture."

Gin culture. Well now!

Can't say as I have a paper on that topic, but as one who regularly defends the honor of gin vis-à-vis vodka--and who still remembers the awful morning she woke up and found her bottle of Bombay Sapphire missing--I sure hope this panel comes together.

(Will there be a tasting? Should I bring the vermouth?)

You're right - gin over vodka, any day! I hope, for your sake, this panel does come together, and lives up to expectations!

Much as I hate to put a damper on this excellent topic of scholarly pursuit, didn't early modern gin tend to be adulterated in nasty ways? I'm an ale sort of girl, myself...

Flavia and FP: I'm thinking double session... (But I can't remember the rhyme to know which panel should go first: "beer before liquor, never sicker"? or the other way around...?)

Hee. Well, now there's this, though that panel strikes me as much less interesting than a scholarly pub crawl through session on, say, small beer, ale, sack, and gin.

Next year!

(And yes, RG: you got the rhyme right. There was a Very Serious article in the NYT not so long ago investigating whether there were any truth to that saying--or to the advice not to mix one's liquors--and apparently it's true only insofar as, if one is already drunk or on one's way to being drunk on beer, it's not a good idea to speed up the process with hard liquor, whereas *lessening* the alcoholic content of one's drinks by moving from liquor to beer is potentially smarter. But there is no combination/ordering that automatically has sick-making properties.)

I think it's cool that your blog is now at the top of Google's list for the phrase "gin culture".

g-fav -- I think it must have already been the top hit for gin culture. Though it is always cool to be able to get to one's own page by clicking the "I'm feeling lucky" link.

sidenote: Google also suggests "Did you mean: 'gun culture'"

The way to make a panel happen is to MAKE A PANEL HAPPEN. Considering the tutorials I've lately received from one Gin Expert I think I could make a fine contribution. I mean how different can early modern and late late modern be anyway?

Also, I'd be up for one on gun culture. And/or the swallowing womb. That's that condition I sometimes develop after drinking my booze in the wrong order, no?
