But nevertheless: Cosimo and I got engaged last weekend. In Union Square Park, in the benevolent shadows of Barnes & Noble and DSW.
I suppose I'm okay with the term fiancé/e (especially when pronounced with the comic upper-crusty accent on the "AN"). But I'm utterly opposed to "wife." Henceforth, I shall be lobbying for "spouse" as the all-purpose, gender- and sexual-orientation-neutral title of the future.

Congrats and best wishes, Flavia!
Oh, Yay for you and Cosimo! Many congratulations!!!
(I do expect further details at a later time, though.)
Congratulations!!
Did you buy celebratory shoes at DSW afterwards? I totally would have used this as a reason to buy shoes..
Congratulations! Maybe I walked right past you as it was happening...I could have thrown confetti or something.
Many heartfelt congratulations! Can't wait to meet him -- any visits planned for this part of the country?
Awesome! Congratulations!
Congratulations! And happiness!
Psycgirl and Ianqui: it was at about 11 p.m. on Thursday night, so no shoes (though I did go into the building, just to see! I wanted some), and I assume you weren't out and about, Ianqui. But I should have called in your services.
Rosa: you always choose the dramatic moments to delurk! We'll be out in LA for MLA in early Jan, so let's be in touch.
Congratulations to you both! What excellent news!
Well, I'm sorry to hear you won't be calling Cosimo the little wifey, but congratulations anyways!
Yay! And I'm with you on "spouse" -- clearly the preferable term.
congratulations! I'm with you on saying fiance with the appropriate accent and avoiding wife altogether!
THIS IS GREAT NEWS! I'm utterly delighted to hear it, and send my best and most heartfelt congratulations to you both.
Congrats!
Woo hoo! Congratulations!
Yay!!
If "spouse" is the preferred term, perhaps fiance/e can give way to "promessi sposi."
(And I, too, say, hooray. I'm very happy about this news.)
Wonderful news!
Congratulations on your future spouse-ness! Yay!
Felicitations!
Spouse is good, but I tend to go with partner.
I DO like Doctor Cleveland's suggestion of "promessi sposi." Very cool!
huzzah! And also? I have been using "spouse" since the day we got hitched, and the responses are interesting. Most people don't blink. But when I corrected a profile at my previous university, I got an eyeroll. Don't care! Feel the same way about wife.
I have a secret fondness for the lower-crust FIE-ants. But whatever you call each other, congratulations.
Mazel tov, Flavia! May it be a long and happy partnership filled with good books and impossibly marked-down designer shoes!
Congrats! I agree, wife (and husband) sound weird, but on the other hand I love having someone I can rely on and come home to, so it is a trade off.
Congrats Flavia!
congrats, how exciting!!!
I second Dr. Koshary's sentiments!!
Wife, wifey, the missus, woman of the house, big mamma...whatever, get used to it. There are worse things to deal with. Be glad you CAN get married!
And it's better than spinster, anyway.
Congratulations! Yea!!
Oh my goodness! Congratulations!
I've only been married a few months so far, but it's been really fun. Even the wedding was more fun than I imagined. So I am doubly excited for you. Let's figure out when we're next in the same time zone, and I'll buy you a few martinis!
Wow! Congratulations!!
Congratulations Flavia! Stanford smoked some serious Bear butt on Saturday--not sure whether this makes you or your betrothed happy--and the other mad?--but in any case wishing you both the best. I have gained a great deal of insight and humor reading your blog throughout my master's degree program. Despite a 3.97 GPA and published writings, I've been turned down by 4 Ph.D programs. I just applied to a 5th and I think last one. Let's hope this one's the charm. If not I will move to Vermont to make maple candy. Or maybe to D.C. to make public policy. Time will tell.
Congratulations!
