You are all beautiful people and I love every single one of you

Last winter, I applied for a research leave for spring 2011. It was denied. Over the summer, I applied again. I got it.

So from approximately December 15th to August 20th--eight months, bitchez!--I'll be drawing a salary just to read and to write and to think.

Oh, I have such plans. But for now, I'm just really fucking psyched.

(And also, I'm totally jealous that you have pre-tenure leave where you are.)

Bro:

Why, I think I should have some SF wines. Thanks for the idea!

MW:

Eh, who knows? It's a state-wide, competitive program through our faculty union (aimed at helping women and minorities achieve parity; we don't otherwise have a pre-tenure leave), and it's been getting more competitive over the past few years--I suspect for state budgetary reasons, though no one will admit as much.

THIS IS FABULOUS. I will high-five you on my way out of my own leave, as you enter yours.

You are such a hero, Flavia, darling. So thrilled for you. Kick ass and take names, from here on out.

A virtual gimlet, raised in your very real honor.

(Oops. That comment from me to MW, above, should have been directed to Dr. V. So hard to keep them medievalists straight!)

But thanks, y'all. I'll be in Cosimolandia for most of it (meaning more than a full year of cohabitation...), though I'm planning at least one month in Europe at the tail end.

Truly awesome! I have no taste for gimlets, so I'll raise an actual glass of whiskey in your honor alongside Moria's glass.
