Just sayin'

It's a strange profession that involves my running out of the house on a Saturday morning, a couple of times a year, in a little black dress and with my arms full of poofy medieval robes--then driving self and robes across town, parading around in them for a few hours, and driving back home.

Answer: How is graduation like a Society for Creative Anachronisms event?

I also feel slightly like an itinerate priest. (Except maybe for the part about the black dress and heels.)

As my institution graduated (and still does) graduate at a large downtown arena to accommodate all the families, I used to park at the university and then grab the subway downtown to attend. I was a marshall for the last 5 or 6 years, and as my grad institutions doctoral robes are fairly distinctive, I used to get quite a lot of looks as I rode the subway the 5 or 6 stops from campus down to the arena.

Good times. I miss those events (along with the students) the most about being out of the academy.

It's even stranger when you sit in those medieval robes in 100 degree heat. But then I didn't wear a little black dress and heals :)

That's EXACTLY why I wear said dress: it's sleveless and collarless and a couple of inches above the knee--and thus the coolest I can be under my robes without being naked.

(Though at 75 degrees and humid, it was still unpleasant under there. Damn those things are hot.)

What is weirder? We hold graduation at the baseball stadium. And process over home plate!

Commencement is SO like a Ren Faire. And I love it.
