In talking to someone today, I mentioned a minor event that happened during the weekend of my Ph.D. graduation. Instead of referring to the festivities as "commencement" or "graduation," however, I said that such-and-so happened "at my wedding."
My subconscious is even more fucked up than I thought.

wow, this is a great slip. maybe for richer and for poorer.
For poorer!
That is priceless!
Ha! I love you, Flavia. Even if you are already taken by your degree.
Did you ever dress as a bride for Halloween? A friend of mine did for many years and now October tends to bring out of her some rather psychotic behavior.
I love it. Flavia, Bride of the Doctorate! Like marriage to a very, very secular church.
Jack: oh, God no. That being said--I do already own the dress I intend to wear if I ever get married. But it's not white, it's not long, it's not froofy--and it cost 20% of what my doctoral robes did--so my regalia probably remains the most expensive and conventional ceremonial attire I'll ever don.
I kept referring to my wedding as my upcoming recital! (I do plan a couple of recitals each year, all requiring food, a dress, invitations, and programs, so it's not that big of a stretch, but still.) :)
Still, that's a less fraught slip than one I once heard a big wig make at a public speech, in which he referred to his wife's *death* instead of her birthday or somesuch thing. It caused great consternation in the crowd, and he got all flustered and said, "No, no, she's still alive!" and tried to go on with his speech, but you just know everyone in the audience was busy thinking, "Hmm, wonder what's going on there?"
