Have cat, will travel

Tomorrow, before daybreak, Nero and I are boarding a plane for State Capital That Is Also Home to a Major University. SCTIAHTAMU (pronounced: sk-TEE-ah-ta-MOO) is not a place I have ever visited, or where I know a soul. However, it is home to the institution that awarded me a bunch of money to do research, so we're off for a month.

In addition to knowing no one, I will not have a car, and my sublet has neither a television nor internet access (though there's free wi-fi on campus). So I anticipate spending a lot of time in the library, or in my own little campus office, Getting Stuff Done. In addition to books for research, I've also packed TEN novels purely for leisure-reading purposes.

The last time I did any serious leisure reading? Was longer ago than the last time I did any serious writing. I'm hoping the immersion method--or maybe it's shock therapy--serves me well on both counts.

Please assuage my jealousy by promising to share which of your ten books are great reads.

Have a wonderful time! I've never been either, but people tell me that SCTIAHTAMU is a great city and a great MU too (brilliant English dept for Renaissance, as you well know).

I wish I could have brought my cat with me here. I miss her terribly. How did Nero take being on a plane? My kitty was really scared.

Have fun, we'll have to talk soon!

Man, I could really go for some of the 2 types of food they do well there. We've, of course, got one of them here, but the other is something I don't get nearly enough of.

(major excitement in my life? I just procured a real, actual couch. Nice to have, after 2 years here.)

I'd wish you safe travels, but you're probably already there by now. So instead I'll wish you a wonderful month of working and reading and snuggling with the kitty.

Just updating to say that I arrived (after some 15 hours in transit, rather than 7, and without my luggage). Failed to pack my laptop's power cord, though, so while I'm waiting on that there's no blogging happening. Soon, soon!

Thanks for the well-wishes--
