Speaking of those more successful than oneself. . .

It's no secret, to them that knows me, that I love the Sunday NYT wedding announcements. The fact that I don't have a paper subscription means that I don't peruse the thing very closely these days, but when I can get my hands on a hard copy, it's always an exquisitely enjoyable 30 minutes.

So when Stave (or possibly Def) sent me this link, you can imagine how much I loved it. You, too, will love it.

Go. Read. Now!

That is hysterical. A few months ago a couple who lives in my building were the video couple for the week in the NYT wedding announcements, discussing their courtship, proposal etc. That was funny enough--but then Jon Stewart played the clip on the Daily Show to mock the feature. I didn't have the heart to ask them if they knew about it.

Hi-larious. I am an obsessive reader of the NYT Sunday Styles section myself, wedding announcements included. How happy I am to find something that takes intervenes in the over-inflated nonsense I find so delectable!

Hah! I totally noticed that one when I also perused the weddings section, a weekly tradition. Personally, this is my favorite part of the gawker post:

N.B. Chick is keeping her name. Uh, OF COURSE SHE IS.

That is excellent! *is retrospectively and nonironically calculating her points, but thinks the scale needs some adjustment for DC...*

What a cool link! I read the NYT wedding announcements section at the gym every Sunday and always snicker in a benevolent way. If you like writings about the NYT wedding announcements you might want to check out Bobs in Paradise by David Brooks. I'm very ambivalent about Brooks but he does have an enormously funny chapter about the implications of the "mergers and acquisitions page" as it is apparently known as by its devotees (although I've never heard it called that term here in California).

I'm so glad that Tiruncula 'fessed up to calculating her points, because that was my first impulse as well, mostly because I knew we'd get that point for getting married by an Episcopal priest. I did hesitate, I'll admit, for losing a point for "Bride is keeping her name"; surely D. and I shouldn't have to lose TWO points since neither of us changed our name?!

You will not be surprised to hear that our score was decidedly lower than that of the couples featured in NY Times. :-)

Ha! I love scoring systems. My relationship gets a grand total of six points. Although I imagine it would be a zero if you added key minuses implied in the scoring system.

Being "unsuccesful" rules :)
