It's so easy to become so centred on your own narrow focus that you lose sight of the bigger picture. I also love going to conferences and presenting papers that aren't necessarily anything to do with my current research project. I find when I come back to the thesis, I am fresher and more creative. I too have a spate of conferences coming up, which I'm really looking forward to. I hope you have a great time attending yours!Amy Palkohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02618608004686768774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27054305.post-51834157715841715132007-02-06T19:39:00.000-05:002007-02-06T19:39:00.000-05:00Yeah, I'm a lot like you on this one.Yeah, I'm a lot like you on this one.Nels P. I love them too, for the same reasons (though like ianqui there's always a little bit of a panic factor too), but most of my colleagues are all Scrooge-y about what a dumb waste of time they are.Pilgrim/Heretichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08588407758172717893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27054305.post-82738628634099823502007-02-06T17:55:00.000-05:002007-02-06T17:55:00.000-05:00I love conferences (even though like Ianqui I get ...I love conferences (even though like Ianqui I get totally nervous beforehand) and I totally agree they are necessary. Unfortunately there is only really one a year in my field in Australia and all the major ones are in Europe and the USA. That means $2000 or so just for travel! And our university grants faculty $250 a YEAR for conferences (grad students get $1000 spread over the course of their whole degree).

At least when you've spent your entire income on job-related expenses it means big tax breaks are coming your way :)StyleyGeekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10287051608503966129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27054305.post-77175548584339970062007-02-06T17:51:00.000-05:002007-02-06T17:51:00.000-05:00See, here's the thing. I actually have a fair amount of anxiety before I go to conferences, because I'm convinced that no one's going to invite me to dinners and drinks, and that I'm going to end up all by myself back in my hotel room. It doesn't usually work out that way in the end, but it doesn't matter--I always fret about it before every conference anyway.

But when they go well, you're right--it's fun to catch up with people and learn the new gossip.Ianquihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03268223727887685830noreply@blogger.com
