(Or because the texts are so marked up there's no space for teaching-appropriate ones.)

Anon:

I'm surprised, too. I had no memory of that, nor do I think it was typical of me even at age 26. (Maybe it's the fact that it was a fairly obscure dissertation, held by a library with no connection to the author?) I'll probably erase most of it before I return it.Flaviahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17832765671541392835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27054305.post-38347740061803724772016-09-22T17:02:05.727-04:002016-09-22T17:02:05.727-04:00Wait. I am having this experience a lot this semester, as I'm teaching some novels I last read in grad school or college. Beneath the heading for the second chapter of Hawthorne's The Blithedale Romance, 20 year-old me wrote, "an experiment in discomfort."

A few years ago, I was visiting the city where I did my Ph.D., and I went to a used book store I frequented all those years ago. Just browsing, I saw a title I remembered reading in grad school and pulled it off the shelf. The marginalia was immediately familiar; it was my old book! I didn't buy it back.lizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07850308167070324694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27054305.post-60758455838847867472016-09-22T09:24:40.571-04:002016-09-22T09:24:40.571-04:00This is awesome. So I look in files and there it is -- heavily annotated. I love rereading my own notes and then seeing something new in the text, too. It's funny how a little time and perspective can change your mind about these things, too. :) Fie upon this quiet life!https://www.blogger.com/profile/12047096700049201873noreply@blogger.com
